Mission Statement
The Des Moines County Historical Society will collect items for preservation, documentation, display, and research, which relate specifically to the history of Des Moines County, Iowa: its people, settlement, agriculture, businesses, industries, culture, arts, archaeology, and built environment. By instilling pride in our heritage and fostering an understanding of our past, we will better comprehend the present and our prospects for the future. The mission of the Des Moines County Historical Society is to communicate to residents and visitors the history and creative spirit of those who lived in the area known as Des Moines County, Iowa.
Collections as an Embodiment of Museum’s Purpose: The Museum collects examples of material culture which illustrates the history of Des Moines County and its residents and how it relates to a geographic place. This includes textiles, artwork, photographs, tools, farm implements, cookware, furniture and decor. Paper items are also prevalent, including newspapers, books, maps, and significant archival documents. These items tell the narrative of Des Moines County in a variety of ways, from personal items to those reflecting local business. Geological, Natural, Paleontological, and Archaeological artifacts pertaining within the historic county space will be reviewed with accurate supporting data. The focus of the collection is to expand as far past the early history of the county and continue with current day local trends and media.
