May 2025 at DMCHS: Celebrating Restoration and Community Engagement

As spring blooms in Burlington, the Des Moines County Historical Society (DMCHS) is abuzz with activity. From the near-completion of significant restoration projects to a lineup of engaging events, there’s much to celebrate and anticipate.

The Stacks Room: A Glimpse into 1901

The long-awaited restoration of the “Stacks” room is nearing completion. This historic space has been meticulously restored to its 1901 grandeur, featuring birdcage lights and replica sconces that illuminate the room with a warm, nostalgic glow. Visitors can look forward to experiencing this beautifully preserved piece of history during the upcoming Snake Alley Days.

“My Dear Vinnie” Exhibit: A Historical Farewell

The “My Dear Vinnie” exhibit, which delves into the lives of Senator James Wilson Grimes and his adopted daughter Lavinia “Vinnie” Noble Grimes Nichols Buck, is concluding its run. This exhibit has offered an intimate look into their lives through manuscripts, oil paintings, photographs, fabrics, furniture, and personal belongings. DMCHS extends heartfelt thanks to Joyce Harvey and her family for their invaluable contributions to this project.

Garrett-Phelps House Restoration: Seeking Support

The restoration of the Garrett-Phelps House is a significant undertaking, with estimated costs exceeding $2 million for repairs to the roof, windows, porches, paint abatement, and mechanical systems. Recent federal budget cuts have suspended funding for museums and libraries, including the Institute for Museums and Library Services. Despite these challenges, DMCHS is committed to preserving this historic landmark and is actively seeking private foundation grants and community support to achieve this goal.

Welcoming Viking Mississippi River Cruises

Starting June 30, 2025, Burlington will host the Viking Mississippi River Excursions. DMCHS is calling for volunteers, including Silver Cord students, to assist in welcoming and guiding riverboat tourists. Interested individuals can contact the Heritage Center at (319) 752-7449 or email Kay Swanson at kswanson@dmchs.org to schedule their availability.

Upcoming Events: Sounds of the Past

DMCHS continues its “Sounds of the Past” series, featuring live performances by Executive Director Colton Overton on the historic Martin Bruhl piano, along with demonstrations of the Edison phonograph. Upcoming sessions include:

  • Historic Riverboat Melodies: Saturday, May 17, 10 am–12 pm
  • Female Composers of America: Saturday, June 21, 10 am–12 pm

Events are held in the Heritage Center’s atrium. Please use the main entrance on the east side at the top of the ramp on Fourth Street. Doors open at 9:45 am.
