Adopt an Artifact Program PreserveS Des Moines County History

The Des Moines County Historical Society (DMCHS) invites community members to play a direct role in preserving area history through its Adopt an Artifact program.

The fundraising initiative, running throughout the month of January, supports the ongoing care, conservation, and proper archival housing of historical objects in the DMCHS collection. Each adopted item represents a tangible piece of Des Moines County’s past and helps ensure that these artifacts remain accessible for future generations.

“Adopt an Artifact gives our supporters a way to directly help care for pieces of Des Moines County’s history that are in need of conservation, repair, or improved archival storage,” said Colton Overton, executive director of DMCHS. “We continuously receive new artifacts, and while every piece is valued, not all of them can receive immediate treatment. This program allows the community to step in and help us protect and steward these items responsibly.”

Items available for adoption include essential archival and conservation tools, such as nitrile gloves and acid-free materials, that are critical for daily preservation work. Donors may also choose to support highly visible artifacts, such as the Jewell Water Fountain, which was gifted by Philip M. Crapo and is in need of repair.

Adopters may choose an artifact that resonates with them personally or commemorates a loved one, milestone, or community connection. Recognition opportunities are available as part of the program.
